Position paper on the political participation of migrant women *

100 years after the introduction of women's suffrage and 70 years after the equal rights article in the Basic Law was passed, women * are still significantly underrepresented in parliaments, especially at the local level. The underrepresentation of MPs with a migration background is even more massive. At the federal and state level as well as at the municipal level, the proportion of immigrant MPs does not even come close to their proportion of the population. Accordingly, social diversity is not reflected in parliaments. This indicates a democratic deficit. The position paper calls on politicians to remedy the clear democratic deficit and to actively advocate local voting rights for all migrants as well as equal political participation for migrants. Especially against the background of increasing right-wing populism, nationalism and the racist appropriation or instrumentalization of migration debates, solidarity and recognition of a tolerant, democratic society are a must!

Against the backdrop of one of the Non-partisan women's initiative Berlin - City of Women eV A specialist dialogue initiated in 2018 on the subject of “Local electoral law: giving migrant women a voice!” Resulted in the position paper on the political participation of migrant women *.

Authorized by DaMigra eV in cooperation with the Non-partisan women's initiative Berlin - City of Women eV, The State advisory board for integration and migration issuesthe Working group women and family (Senate Department for Integration, Labor and Social Affairs) and the Migration Council Berlin-Brandenburg eV the position paper has now been handed over to the boards of the government parliamentary groups and the political spokespersons of the Berlin House of Representatives.
