Heavy blow to women's rights: Turkey withdraws from the Istanbul Convention - SWR2
SWR2 on July 01.07.2021st, XNUMX.
A conversation between Philine Sauvageot and Dr. Delal Atmaca, Managing Director of DaMigra
More than 2020 women were killed in Turkey in 300. The Istanbul Convention was a milestone, not only for combating violence against women internationally, but also for prevention.
“These agreements are extremely important because they provide a legal framework in which the states are obliged to protect and prevent violence and to prosecute such crimes. In this respect, the Istanbul Convention was extremely important for all signatory states and of course also for Turkey, as far as protection from violence is concerned, ”says Dr. Delal Atmaca, member of the alliance for the Istanbul Convention and managing director of the umbrella organization of migrant women organizations, in SWR2.
The convention not only protects women, but also vulnerable groups such as LGBTI members. Turkey's withdrawal from the convention had a fatal signal effect on other countries such as Hungary and Poland.
"In addition, it is still the case that the European Union as such has unfortunately not yet signed the Istanbul Convention, because it is precisely these conservative forces like in Poland and Hungary who are working to ensure that we do not have an emancipatory society have, ”says Atmaca.
These conservative forces are also present in many other European countries.
