"Corona teaches us all a lesson" - an action by DaMigra, MigrantinnenVerein Berlin eV and Gesundheitskollektiv Berlin eV

Berlin. May 18, 2020. Everyday protective masks have been one of the urgently needed articles to protect the health of everyone since the beginning of the corona pandemic. However, free and easy-to-get everyday masks are in short supply in Neukölln. This is organized for Berliners who for various reasons do not have the opportunity to implement health protection measures Mut-Makers * project from DaMigra, the umbrella association of migrant organizations with the Migrantinnenverein Berlin eV and the Health collective Berlin eV a joint sewing action.

“Today the Migrantinnenverein Berlin eV and DaMigra eV sew protective masks. Unfortunately, there just aren't enough free masks out there. We have to help ourselves. Once again it is the women * who are left with this work! We don't like that because it's always like that. The women * grab a needle and thread and solve the problem. We sew the masks out of solidarity. Together we are strong! We sew protective masks for the elderly, mothers and children. I've already given two of them to my neighbors, who can't go to the doctor without protective masks. They were very happy that they were given them, says Nesli Kavi from the MigrantinnenVerein Berlin eV “When the pandemic broke out, we all struggled to get protective masks. This stress weighed on us. That is why I like to support the sewing campaign with DaMigra and today I sew with other friends. It feels good that these protective masks go to those in need, supplements Tulay Karatas, Also Aysun Cicek is happy to be able to make a contribution - despite a broken arm. “Corona teaches us all a lesson. The women * settle for themselves. I am one of them. "If I had already known all that I know today ..." I think and then I'd better stop again. Life is easier when you share. It's nice that the Migrantinnenverein Berlin eV exists. There everyone tries to create and share something. I see that we can create something out of nothing. I am of the opinion that we can survive Corona well as long as we share and stick together, ”she says optimistically.

Health is a human right. However, disadvantaged people have more difficult access to health, although they belong to risk groups or are urgently dependent on health protection due to their living and housing situation. The Gesundheitskollektiv Berlin eV would like to give everyone equal access to health. Therefore the Gesundheitskollektiv Berlin eV is founding a center in Neukölln with medical, social work, psychological care and community work under one roof. Health-promoting offers and participatory research in the living environment of the residents are also organized.
