Invitation to the film: ELAHA by Milena Aboyan

Dear future members,

We hereby invite you to the film afternoon. As part of DaMigra's anti-racism project, women rais.ed, we would like to show the film ELAHA and then discuss the content. The film tells the story of a 22-year-old German-Kurdish woman, between traditions, culture and self-determination. The Armenian-born filmmaker Milena Aboyan, herself a Yazidi Kurd, shows the world of Eleha and her family far removed from prejudices, clichés and attributions from others. In her film, Aboyan tells how Elaha empowers herself and the fight for the right to make decisions about her body. The film appeals to recognize patriarchy as a common social problem whose origins are universal. In this way, the topic of everyday racism and its interweaving with patriarchal structures is illuminated.

The following topics are discussed:

  • What does self-determination and empowerment mean from the perspective of a German-Kurdish woman?
  • How does emancipation succeed despite social norms?
  • Why is an intersectional view of forms of oppression necessary?
  • What does the film say about the various manifestations of racism?

After the film we want to offer an exchange space: What do you take with you from the film? What did you like and/or dislike? What aspects of the protagonist's personality or the story intrigued or challenged you the most?

“It's important to me to tell stories in which women are not sexualized. We can tell violence against women without showing this brutal violence against women. Women over 40 should be able to play more leading roles without being reduced to their age or body. I always try to make sure there is a strong presence of women in front of the camera, but also behind the camera.”
