Migrant self-organization and feminist civil society on an equal footing!

In Germany there are not the "one" civil society. Actors of migrant civil society, in particular various intersectional feminist migrant self-organizations, have been active within German civil society for decades - also because they felt their own concerns and interests were largely ignored in the German women's movement and feminist civil society. Despite many years of self-organization, their concerns and their work still have little presence - both in political and in general public perception.
Even though feminist approaches are currently gaining more attention in society, feminist migrant organizations are not sufficiently involved in goal and decision-making processes. They are still excluded from established institutions and are not sufficiently recognized as equal partners.
At this year's DaMigra annual conference, we would like to address the following questions, among others:
- Who is the so-called feminist civil society in Germany, and to what extent are migrants and their self-organizations seen as part of feminist civil society?
- What role do migrants and refugee women and their concerns play in feminist, civil society discourse in Germany?
- What role do migrant organizations, especially feminist migrant organizations, play in stabilizing and further developing democratic civil society in Germany?
We want to discuss these and other questions in two panel discussions, the first with representatives and experts from science and civil society, the second with political representatives on November 24, 2023.
In addition to the panel discussions, the event will offer three individual, participatory workshops to learn more about the diverse work of migrant feminist organizations and networks. Of course, we also want to take a self-critical look inside. How do power dynamics and exclusions work within the various migrant communities and what understanding(s) of solidarity are there here?
