Stop FGM/C in Germany: Take a close look at the healthcare system – strengthen skilled workers!

Violence against women has many faces and one of them is female genital mutilation/cutting: FGM/C. This form of violence is so geographically widespread that it cannot be said to have any specific religious or cultural tradition. However, the fact is: FGM/C is a gender-specific human rights violation and has serious physical and mental consequences for those affected. Although FGM/C has been punishable in the German Criminal Code (§ 2013a StGB) since 226, the number of those affected is not decreasing. The Istanbul Convention also obliges, in Articles 15, 16, 19 and 38, professionals in the FGM/C health sector to adequately support those affected and to train and further train professionals themselves.

Doctors and healthcare professionals regularly come into contact with those affected by FGM/C. The German Medical Association recommends preventive measures and information for treating doctors when dealing with affected women. Despite this legal framework and the warning from the German Medical Association, FGM/C is still being practiced in Germany and those affected are still not receiving the necessary support they need.

Instead, they have to fight for safe healthcare. It is essential to address this problem together with experts from the health sector and organizations affected by those affected and to develop concrete measures that serve to combat FMG/C and effectively protect women from this act of violence.

We would like to do that too. So this event is an attempt to pave the way in this direction. Because:

  • Where are the concrete barriers to accessing healthcare and the healthcare system?
  • What preventive measures are necessary to advance the fight against FGM/C in Germany?
  • How can the health sector develop better measures to directly support those affected by FGM/C?
  • What collaborations exist between organizations of those affected and doctors and health professionals? What can we learn from it?

We want to answer these and other questions together with Dr. med. Zerm Christoph, specialist in gynecology and obstetrics and expert in female genital mutilation, Jawahir Cumar, managing director of the Stop Mutilation Germany advice center. V., Fadumo Korn, co-founder of NALA eV, Dr. Eiman Tahir, gynecologist and expert for FGM/C, Dr. med. Dan mon O'Dey, specialist in reconstructive and plastic surgery, and FGM/C and Dr. med. Heidemarie Pankow, pediatrician, (requested) discuss online on March 14.3.2024, XNUMX.
